"Web design is a process of creating websites"
But web design is a big thing its not that easy as it seems. Web design itself is a field of CS( Science ) inside, it contains many other areas like IA( Information Architecture ), Interactive Design, Back-end programming( PHP, .Net ), Mockups( Creating website visually on paper or on photoshop ) and many other areas.
Today websites can be access(consumed) by many different devices like laptops, desktops, smart phones( Mobile phones ), tablets, as well as printers( user can print your webpage & read later ) and softwares like browsers, screen reader and rss reader can now consume your online web content.
There is also an issue that what type of content( Visual things ) your website contain does it only contain images or videos or text or interactive content( Games, services like facebook, twitter, flickr & google maps ) or all the combination above.
The only question i hear from a new webdesigner is what to learn first? I recommend learn HTML and CSS(Cascading Style Sheet) side by side. If you really dont want to learn these languages but need to create website then services like ( Blogger, Wordpress, Typepad, Joomla and Drupal ) are for you.
